Barndominium Builders in La Grande, Oregon
La Grande is the Union County seat and the service town for the Grande Ronde Valley, with valley farmland on one side and the forested slopes of the Blue Mountains on the other. For a barndominium that means two very different settings within a short drive. Inside the city and its urban growth boundary, the Rural Residential and Hillside Development zones offer bigger lots where a shop house with room for a few animals can work, while standard residential lots suit a smaller home with a generous garage bay. Out in the valley, county farm and forest zoning takes over; see our Union County page for that side. We draw custom plans to fit the lot, supply barndominium kits to owners who plan to raise the shell themselves, and build complete homes from site work to finish. The city's Building Division handles permits and inspections, and the same office also serves the rural county, so one counter covers most of the valley. City lots connect to La Grande's sewer system. Floodplain matters here too, because the city is redrawing its regulatory flood maps with newer mapping data. A pole barn home fits well on the larger valley-edge lots. Send the address through the survey and we will check the zone, the flood status and the sewer route before anything is designed; we can also take on site preparation.

Pole Barn Homes near La Grande
A pole barn home sets its frame on posts and trusses (the engineering term is post-frame), which often suits a simple, wide layout with a shop bay under the same roof. Whether it fits your parcel comes down to the zoning and the site, set out below.
Permits, Zoning and Septic in La Grande
In Oregon the land-use answer often comes before the building answer. Here is who decides each part in La Grande, taken from the office or document that publishes it. Rules change, so check them again against your parcel before anything is drawn.
City of La Grande Building Division (City Hall)
The Building Division at La Grande City Hall takes a project from application through plan review and permit issuance, starting with a meeting with its permit technicians, and its inspection staff then work through the inspections once a permit is issued. A barndominium used as a home follows the same path as any new house.

City of La Grande Community Development, Planning Division
The Planning Division oversees land use standards for residential, commercial and industrial development within the City of La Grande and its urban growth boundary. Besides the ordinary residential zones, the city has Hillside Development and Rural Residential zones, where the number of animals allowed on a lot is limited by its pasture area.

City of La Grande Sanitary Sewer and Wastewater Treatment Division
The city's Sewer Division maintains 80 miles of sanitary sewer main lines, and its treatment plant operates under a DEQ waste discharge permit. Lots in town are normally served by that system; land beyond it needs a septic permit through the county's onsite service.

- Floodplain maps being redrawn
- The city is updating its floodplain maps to define the 100-year regulatory floodplain more accurately with lidar data and 3D modelling, covering the city limits, its urban growth boundary and some bordering county land. The city notes the draft maps are not official until the Federal Emergency Management Agency reviews and accepts them (read 26 September 2026).
- One building office for city and county
- The Building Codes Division's Local Building Department Directory lists the same La Grande City Hall office and building official for both La Grande and Union County, stating that the county's building department services are provided by the City of La Grande (read 26 September 2026).
- Detached accessory dwelling size
- The Planning Division says a detached accessory dwelling unit in La Grande's residential zones may be no larger than 800 square feet and must be smaller than the living area of the main house, so an apartment above a shop on a lot that already has a house is capped (read 26 September 2026).

Building on land near La Grande
Check the zone and the flood status together. The Grande Ronde River and its creeks shape the low ground in and around town, and with the city's flood maps under revision, a parcel's status could change, so ask the Planning Division which map it reads today. On the hillside lots, slope and access decide where a shop bay can sit. If the plan is a second building on a lot that already has a house, the accessory dwelling cap limits the living space, so a full barndominium usually needs its own parcel. For acreage with pasture, the Rural Residential zone inside the boundary or county land in the valley is where to look. Confirm sewer reach early: a lot at the edge of town may not be served yet.
